ND Horse Herd Owner Pleads Not Guilty to Cruelty

A New Salem man accused of mistreating horses and donkeys has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor animal cruelty charges in Morton County.

MANDAN, N.D. — A New Salem man accused of mistreating horses and donkeys has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor animal cruelty charges in Morton County.

William Kiefer entered his pleas Tuesday to five counts through his attorney. He faces up to five years in prison if convicted.

Authorities seized more than 150 horses and mules from Kiefer's properties in Morton and Burleigh counties in January after finding nearly 100 dead animals. He faces similar animal cruelty charges in Burleigh County. He has not yet entered pleas there.
