Digging out after a storm forces street departments to dig into the budget. With overtime, fuel and equipment it costs the city of Grand Forks about 10,000 dollars every time it plows the streets. That has been done seven times since January 1st.

Street Superintendent Mark Aubol says since the annual budget just started the first of the year, it's not a concern. But it can become one when it storms in November and December. He says there are some tricks the city can do to help the budget. Aubol: "Say we get a two inch snow fall one day and we are supposed to get two more a day later. We may plow the mains and secondaries, and then go back and plow the whole town after that second event comes through."

Aubol says about 100,000 dollars is spent on just salt and sand for streets each winter.
