The Lake Region was hit with the brunt of the latest winter storm with 15 inches of snow or more falling in some places. The storm finally let up late Monday night and the lake region spent today digging out.
People we talked with in Devils Lake today spent hours, and in some cases days clearing the snow from this latest winter storm.
It's Mike Thomas' job to keep the city's lots clear. Mike: "Been moving snow the last two days. 24 hours the last two nights, moving snow in parking lots and other lots."
After dealing with the storm all night, he gets to do it all over again. Mike: "I came home this morning and got a couple hours of sleep and now I decided I better clean out all my neighbors' lots. I do about five of us around here. I keep them clean. They're older people."
Devils Lake is covered, and locals are dealing with it any way they can -- with shovels, blowers or bringing in heavy equipment. The relentless storm even forced some folks to clear snow twice, and the work isn't done yet. Mike: "Doing the final cleanup tomorrow or whatever and we'll go do all the lots again."
But even for the worst storm of the year, it's just another day in the life for North Dakotans.
Connie Tollefson, Devils Lake resident: "We've lived in North Dakota all our lives so you kind of know when they say a winter watch, you better beware."
Larry Becker, resident: "This is the worst one that I've had to push...I don't call it worst. I like snow."
The region might not get much of a chance to enjoy clear sidewalks and streets as the National Weather Service is predicting a 30 percent chance of snow again on Thursday. Officials aren't yet sure how all this snow will affect the flood risk for Devils lake, but the National Weather Service says it's releasing an updated flooding forecast for the area on Thursday afternoon that will include the weekend storm.
