Regional leaders met Wednesday to talk housing problems in the area, specifically the lack of affordable housing. Grand Forks County officials partnered with the Base Realignment Impact Committee to discuss solutions.

If the Grand Forks Air Force Base is approved for the tanker mission it recently applied for there will be hundreds, possibly thousands of new residents moving to the area. Currently, housing at the base is 100 percent full. In addition to the tanker mission possibly coming, the county is in talks to lease land from the base to develop private businesses, which could bring thousands more to the area.

John Schmisek, Grand Forks County/BRIC: "If we can develop that business park out there and bring in a few thousand new employees and people that would have to live here. And as we look at it we're going well that's kind of a stumbling block if we don't have the housing. So we want to get ahead of that curve."

Officials say if both parties are in agreement, the lease should be finalized by November.

And another meeting to continue regional housing discussions will be set at a later date.
