Cattle Prices DroppingThousands of cattle aren't worth as much as they were just a few months ago.
Thousands of cattle aren't worth as much as they were just a few months ago.
Matt Lachenmeier is Livestock Consultant for Kist Livestock in Mandan. Lachenmeier says a calf market that was strong this fall has been losing dollars since the beginning of the year. He says packers and feed yards losing money is now impacting the prices at the sale barn.
Lachenmeier: "With the feed yard and the packers using a lot of red ink and taking losses, we are just seeing that affect sales in the barn and I don't think it's ever gonna get as high as it was last year. I know we've seen record highs and we should be seeing that just because the numbers are low. There are a lot less cattle out there."
Lachenmeier says since this fall, the calf price has dropped about ten dollars per hundred weight.
