A proposed technology complex on the Grand Forks Air force Base may have its first tenant. Senator John Hoeven announced today that Northrop Grumman, a UAS manufacturer, has made a commitment that would likely make it an anchor business at the complex.
Northrop manufactures the Global Hawk, the same unmanned planes stationed at the base. Now the company has committed an even greater presence there.
Northrop Grumman officials visited the base in November to see what opportunities Grand Forks and the region have to offer to the company.
Tom Vice, Northrop Grumman: "We look forward to what we are focused on the area of unmanned systems is a key tenant of our corporation and we are really excited about what we are hearing today."
Less then five months after the visit, Senator John Hoeven announced that Northrop Grumman has committed to be a part of a proposed high-tech complex on the base.
Hoeven: "Will make our base unique and build our leadership role in the region as a premier hub for unmanned aerial systems in the country.
The Air Force is currently developing land that would be leased to a local economic development group that will invest in programs and facilities that support the missions performed at the base. Northrop Grumman will anchor that facility.
Eric Icard, Grand Forks Regional Economic Develpopment: "Much like a Macy's or a Target are to a mall. If you look at it in that aspect this is our tenant and the other will fall in to place."
Icard says this technical park and the UAS mission at the base are completely separate from any future tanker mission at the base but local leaders says such a facility will add stability to the base. The company will work through the details and plans to make additional announcements about specific activities.
