North Dakota lawmakers have shifted their focus on DUI Legislation. There are two bills still being considered.
At first they both proposed jail time for a first offense, but that has since changed. Senate bill 2240 was amended based on senators' concerns with how the increased penalties would impact jails, judges and prosecutors. Even with the changes, penalties and fines for DUI's increase. Another bill, House Bill 1302 also addresses tougher DUI laws. That bill was also heard today. Lawmakers are unsure how both bills will proceed. Chairman of the House Transportation Committee Representative Dan Ruby says it's rare one conference committee would work to combine both bills into one, but it is possible.
