Lake Region fishing guides are predicting the bite will be strong once the ice melts in the spring.

Kyle Blanchfield with Woodland Resorts says he's already busy booking trips for eager fishing enthusiasts from around the country. Game and Fish surveys have shown higher numbers of young fish in the last few years, which should pay off for anglers this spring. Blanchfield says the higher fish numbers will make for a lot of action on the lake this year. He also says recent snowfall will make conditions great for shore fishing once the ice is off of the lake.

Blanchfield: "This year we're going to have reasonable runoff and current again, which means all those upper basin coulees, from Devils Lake to Cando to Starkweather to Churchs Ferry are going to be be really good."

But we may have to wait a while for those good fishing conditions. Blanchfield predicts there could be ice on Devils Lake into the month of May.
