A lake region author says she's branching out by reaching into her past for her latest book. Paula Winskye's 12th book to be published is her first written for children. "Gold Star Lee" is the story of a young girl and her horse. It's written at a sixth grade reading level. Her other books are adult-oriented mysteries. Winskye says she decided to publish the book under her native name -- Paula Pfeiffer -- partly to differentiate it from her other work. And because she's been working on the book since she was a teenager.

Winskye: "I wrote a version of it when I was a teenager. It would barely be recognizable. I was such a bad writer when I was a teenager, but the plot is basically the same."

Winskye says she plans to release another mystery novel next month. Readers interested in Winskye's books can find them at Stitchin Sisters in Devils Lake, Wayne's Variety in Park River and Cavalier and at amazon.com.
