Even though Grand Forks's economy is much better than the rest of the nation's, requests for help are up at an area non-profit agency. This year requests are up 41 percent at the The Grand Forks-East Grand Forks and area United Way. The organization is hoping to raise $1 million, which is 5 percent more than last year's campaign raised. That money went to health and human service agencies this year. There's another month left in the campaign. At this point United Way is expecting to raise about $962,000. United Way President Pat Berger says the increased need is only partially due to the struggling economy.

Pat Berger/United Way President: "Part of that is also due to the fact that there are no longer just a small group of agencies, but in fact there are now fifty agencies and programs that have applied."

One positive aspect though, campaign donations are up almost two percent over last year.

The United Way will be taking donations through March 31. If you would like to donate , you can visit their website: www.unitedwaygfegf.org or call them at 701 775 8661.
