Forbort Leaves UND to Sign with NHL's Kings

The Los Angeles Kings have signed UND defenseman Derek ForboRt to a three-year entry-level contract. Forbort was a first-round choice of the Kings in the 2010 draft.

(LOS ANGELES) -- The NHL's Los Angeles Kings have signed UND defenseman Derek Forbort to a three-year entry level contract, the Kings announced Friday. Forbort, 21, thus passes up his senior season at UND.

The 6-5, 207-pound native of Duluth, Minn., was selected by the Kings in the first round (15th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Forbort played the last three seasons at North Dakota. This season, year he played in 42 games and scored 17 points (4-13=17) and 22 penalty minutes. In 2011-12 he played in 35 games (13 points,) and in 2010-11 he played in 38 games (15 points).

Forbort also has experience with the U.S. National Dev. Team and the U.S. Nat. Under-18 Team. For the U.S. he earned a bronze medal at the 2011 World Junior Championships and a gold medal at the 2010 Under-18 World Junior Championship event.
