North Dakota's 2013 Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Ally conference is rallying in Grand Forks this weekend with a focus on inclusion. They say there's discrimination right here in the Red River Valley against the gay community.

Those I spoke with say it's not just about fighting back against discrimination, but also discovering where gay rights issues currently stand -- nationally, regionally and personally.

Participants say the conference is all about speaking out for those who may be being bullied, hurt and threatened

Gabi Cain, a UND student says she feels accepted while at school, but it's a different story outside of the campus community.

Gabi: "I work a lot of jobs, so there I ran into some problems."

Jacob Thomas says there's always more to be done for this community.

Thomas: "I've heard of some not so good things where we still have to work in some areas. But overall I think we're doing pretty good, especially for the midwest."

Gabi: "It's trying to just get everybody involved and progress, and see how we can make our community, our city, our campus better."

Thomas says raising awareness is the key.

Jacob: "It's important to just get word out there that there are people who are just like you who may be disenfranchised or maybe have certain things taken away that you take for granted."

Saturday's activities start at 9 a.m. in Gamble Hall. There's will be speakers and workshops on campus throughout the day. The day ends with a dance at 7 Saturday night at the Canad Inn.
