Cooler weather good news for Devils Lake flood outlook

It's been cold but so far our weather this spring has been ideal to minimize the damage this year's run-off could have in Devils Lake.

The snow pack was larger than normal this year but thus far it's been melting very slowly. National Weather Service projections showed a chance of precipitation this weekend could have hastened the run-off, but that didn't happen. The slow melt allows time for the ground to thaw as well, meaning less water reaches the lake and levels could be lower at the end of the year.

Despite the ideal conditions now, it could warm up any time, and any significant rainfall could drastically increase the speed of the run-off.
