James Hume, the Thompson, N.D., man facing three felony charges of child neglect or abuse involving living with three small children in what investigators called a dirty, unsafe, unsanitary garage last summer turned down a plea deal Monday.

Hume, 32, appeared in state district court in Grand Forks before Judge Debbie Kleven, who set his trial for August. Told by Hume’s attorney, David Ogren, he was declining a plea deal from prosecutors, Kleven told Hume he faced up to five years in prison on each count if he’s convicted.

Hume also faces a separate but related charge of felony terrorizing, involving a possible witness in the child neglect case, also a Class C felony with a five-year maximum sentence. He’s scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing and/or arraignment on that charge April 17.
