WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) -North Dakota schools are hiring more
counselors to meet requirements passed by the Legislature last
year.
Lawmakers changed the ratio of counselors from one for every 450
students to one for every 300 students.
School counselors do everything from advising students on
careers to resolving conflicts. Marilyn Orgaard, the state
assistant director of school counselor programs, says requiring
more counselors is a good investment.
Lori DeRemer has been the sole counselor for more than 500
students at West Fargo's Sheyenne Ninth Grade Center. She says the
new requirement will increase the visibility of counselors in
classrooms.
