ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Senate has passed a bill to rename a portion of State Highway 23 after slain Cold Spring police officer Tom Decker.
The bill passed unanimously by the Senate on Thursday is meant to honor Decker, who was shot and killed on a call in downtown Cold Spring last November. A man police described as a "person of interest" committed suicide about a month later after investigators pursued him.
Senator Michelle Fischbach of nearby Paynesville praised Decker as both an officer and a beloved husband, father, son and brother. Members of Decker's family and Cold Spring officials were in the Senate gallery for the vote.
Fischbach's bill renames Highway 23 for Decker from the town of Richmond to Wakefield Township. Signs will mark that stretch of road. An identical House bill awaits a vote in that chamber.
