Uncle: UW student with meningitis brain-dead

The uncle of a University of Wisconsin-Madison student hospitalized with bacterial meningitis says his nephew has been declared brain-dead.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The uncle of a University of Wisconsin-Madison student hospitalized with bacterial meningitis says his nephew has been declared brain-dead.

The university says the family of 21-year-old senior Henry Mackaman of St. Paul, Minn., has removed him from life support.

Mackaman's uncle, Dan Mackaman, says his nephew was declared brain-dead Wednesday and his organs are to be harvested for donation Thursday afternoon.

Henry Mackaman was an economics and English double major. The university says he was known for his love of music and was a DJ on WSUM student radio.

The university says meningococcal disease is not highly contagious, and there is no health risk to others on campus.

Students who need counseling or support are encouraged to contact University Health Services.
