Springfest will go on as planned this year. City leaders tonight approved liquor sales by Rhombus Guys at University Park, but, the future may not be so clear.
Residents in the area have suggested having the event moved, most notably downtown. But as it turns out University Park may be the Springfest location for next year as well.
Neighbors in the area surrounding University Park have called Springfest a nightmare. The event brings in large groups of UND students looking to party one last time before finals week. Some say this wouldn't be much of a problem if all of the drinking was kept within the confines of University Park, but it's the numerous house parties on University Avenue that cause the problem.
Terry Nelson, Grand Forks resident: "This really can't be called spring fest, this really almost needs to be called drunk fest."
Residents like Terry Nelson in the past have suggested moving Springfest altogether, but some city leaders don't see that as a solution.
Dana Sande, City Councilman: "Moving springfest downtown is not a good idea, because all we're gonna do is move something from one place where people don't like it and put it in another place and let other people not like it."
Grand Forks Police officers say now they have to come up with a game plan to beef up security at Springfest at University Park.
John Packett, Grand Forks Police Chief: "The police department will devote 12 police officers to the perimeter of the event, typically we would devote about six."
With bigger police presence on the outskirts they say residents could rest a little easier knowing that those house parties will me monitored.
It would seem that Springfest is set to stay in University Park but some council members suggested moving the event outside of residential areas. While no concrete considerations were made, the location that stood out the most was the Alerus Center parking lot.
