Ice fishing still viable on Devils Lake, in sharp contrast from last year

One year ago today boats were cruising on clear water on Devils Lake, but today the lake remains covered with more than 30 inches of ice. With those good ice conditions, fishing experts are telling anglers to keep their winter gear handy for at least the next few weeks.

Lake lovers are saying this year is the craziest spring they've ever seen. Conditions are still cold enough to be growing ice on Devils Lake instead of melting it. There is some good fishing on the lake, if you can reach it. Heavy snow has made travel nearly impossible with a truck. Guides recommend using a snowmobile or four wheeler. Woodland Resorts owner Kyle Blanchfield says he's had to disappoint numerous people calling in asking when open water fishing will start. Guide Jeff Katzer says it's impossible to tell when open water will start to show on the lake. This year, experts say ice will likely be on the lake at least through May 10.
