Primary election results for two Spirit Lake council seats show voters are siding with those who are trying to remove tribal chairman Roger Yankton.

The top two vote-getters in the Fort Totten district were Clarise Brownshield and Russell McDonald. Brownshield came forward last week with allegations of corruption on the part of the council and a general assembly voted Sunday to name McDonald the new tribal chair, a move that some are calling illegal. In the Saint Michael district, council vice-chair Duane Jackson was defeated in the primary. Robert Thompson and Mardell Lewis will move on to face each other for that council seat. Tuesday's winners will face off in the general election in two weeks.
