One UND med school bill defeated

The North Dakota House defeated one bill that funded a new medical school on the UND campus but another bill still reserves funding for a similar project. Senate bill 2233 included $56 million for a new building.

The North Dakota House defeated one bill that funded a new medical school on the UND campus but another bill still reserves funding for a similar project. Senate bill 2233 included $56 million for a new building.

The current UND medical school is more than 60 years old and in bad shape. The building is used for training doctors and other healthcare personnel, many who stay in the state. Lawmakers have looked at several options and have decided building new is still the best way to go.

Rep. Corey Mock D-Grand Forks: "We owe it to our constituents whether you're in Grand Forks or Watford City, to have highly trained medical personnel working in your communities."

Representatives approved a new funding formula for ND college and universities. The bills will more than likely go to conference committee because of differences between the House and Senate versions.
