(GRAND FORKS) -- Tony Bina says he has resigned as Grand Forks Central boys hockey coach, but will remain at Central as activities director, beginning with the 2013-14 school year.

Bina coached the Knights for eight seasons, winning a state championship in 2010. However, Central has not reached the state tournament in the last two seasons.

Bina said he wanted to continue as boys hockey coach, but was told by officials that his new duties would not permit it.

Bina will succeed Kyle Ellingson as Central activities director. Bina says Ellingson will remain in the Grand Forks school system as a teacher.

"I enjoyed my time as a coach at Central," Bina told WDAZ Wednesday night. "It is tough to leave, but I enjoyed it a lot. It was a great honor to be Central's coach."

Bina is a Grand Forks native and Central graduate. He played at Central from 1993 to 1996 and was a member of Central's 1995 state championship team.

Bina was a Central assistant coach from 1999 to 2002. He then served as goalie coach at Minnesota-Crookston in 2001-02. Bina was head coach at Bismarck High from 2003 to 2005.
