Devils Lake will be welcoming a brand new hotel before the year is out. The city commission approved the development of a 60 room "Sleep Inn" hotel across from where a proposed convention center is slated to be built.

The hotel is just the latest in a flurry of development on the east side of Devils Lake. The new hotel will be built south of Highway Two on the eastern edge of the city limits. Before the hotel can open though, the city will have to extend water and sewer services, which don't stretch to the proposed site of the hotel. The city is also planning further infrastructure improvements to eventually link up with the new water system proposed for the North side of highway two, where a Wal-Mart and a convention center are being planned.

Dick Johnson, Devils Lake Mayor: "This is just the first step. We know that's going to happen. We have approved the developer's agreement, and we think this is just the first stem in many to come that's going to be good for the city of Devils Lake."

The hotel developer will cover three quarters of the cost of the water infrastructure. The hotel developer hopes to begin the project soon and have the hotel open by this fall.
