There may soon be more restrictions on on pet owners in Devils Lake. A citizen committee presented five new pet ordinances to the city this week.

One proposal would limit pet owners to six combined dogs and cats. Pet owners currently with more animals than that would be able to keep their animals. Other new rules would set requirements for animal care and make it illegal for owners to let cats run free outside without restraints. The committee met over a period of months, and took inspiration from other pet ordinances around the state.

Jim Moe, Pet Ordinance Committee: "We drafted based on some information we received from other communities. We referenced some of their ordinances on how they handle animals."

The city of Devils Lake will take public comments on the proposed ordinances through May sixth, when the city commission is expected to vote on passing the ordinances.
