House veto attempts overturned

The North Dakota House falls short in its attempt to overturn two of the Governor's vetoes. Bismarck Representative Larry Klemin asked house members to consider overriding the veto on a bill that would allow special elections on home rule charters.

The North Dakota House falls short in its attempt to overturn two of the Governor's vetoes. Bismarck Representative Larry Klemin asked house members to consider overriding the veto on a bill that would allow special elections on home rule charters.

Governor Dalrymple vetoed the bill because special elections typically have low turnouts and important issues involving raising taxes should be considered during a general or primary election. Representative Larry Klemin says the veto creates greater problems for the maxed out Burleigh County Jail. Burleigh and Morton County Commissioners asked Klemin to introduce the bill so residents could vote on funding a new regional jail. The House was also unsuccessful in overturning the Governor's veto on a bill that deals with salaries for basic nursing home providers.
