College is sometimes referred to as "the best four years of your life" but this isn't always the case. UND recently launched a website -- "UND Cares" -- to provide students suffering from mental health issues a list of resources for help.
Students across the country are often juggling classes, work, homework and other activities on a daily basis. Many students and faculty admit that these heavy workloads can go as far as affecting student's mental health.
Casie Hoffert, UND Student: "It really drains on me as a person and my stress levels and just being overtired and not getting enough sleep as I should and just my overall health."
Casie isn't the only student who feels that college life is, at times, overwhelming.
Hilary Skjei, UND Student: :I do sit throughout the class and think of oh i need to be doing this and lately i've been doing homework for other classes during other classes to get things done in time."
In comparison to the National College Health Assessment, which surveys colleges throughout the country, over 80% of students felt "stressed out".
Laurie Betting, UND Health and Wellness Associate VP: "In 2012, six of the top ten impediments to academic success had a mental health component, stress being number one."
Stress has remained the number one burden in school since these national surveys were started in 2000. The national averages of stressors felt among students that UND nearly matched were sleep deficiency, finances and academics. UND has created the UNDCares website to provide students and outlet for when the workload overloads.
Betting: "We just want to make sure that people understand that some of that is the normal transition to college life. But when it becomes abnormal and it starts impacting their ability to function in the classroom or personal relationships, we want people to understand, again, that there are resources out there for them."
While some say winter brings in its own bouts of stress and depression, the UND Health and Wellness says that the pressures students face last throughout the entire school year, even summer.
