Ice fishing continues on Devils Lake, despite warmup

With the temperatures warming up, you would assume people are gearing up for summer recreation. But that's not the case in Devils Lake, where this weekend will still provide excellent ice fishing conditions.

The next couple days are perfect for anyone who wants to suntan and ice fish at the same time. The warm weather hasn't had a chance to melt ice on the lake. There's still at least 30 inches covering Devils Lake, along with several inches of slush. That slush means trucks won't help much, but angers can still get around on foot or with a snowmobile. There were some fishermen enjoying the weather on the ice today, and guide Jon Dircks says he expects this weekend to

be busy. He says it may be the last weekend before the weather starts to affect ice levels.

Dircks: "It'll be the next week or two. It's supposed to be in the 60s this weekend and early in the week and that snow will go down fast. When that snow goes then the ice is gonna go quick too."

Anglers say the bite can be good this weekend, especially during the early morning and later afternoon. Even with the warm temps, the ice won't melt right away. Ice conditions are expected to be good enough to fish on until around May 10th.
