The President of Lake Region State College is lobbying the state legislature to approve the first facility upgrades at the college in more than 35 years. The college is trying to secure 5.9 million dollars to update and expand the Earlandson Technical Center, which hasn't been updated since 1978.

College President Doug Darling spent yesterday in Bismarck talking to legislators. The funding would be provided in the higher education bill that's currently in a legislative committee. The Earlandson center currently houses six programs, and serves more than twice as many students than it did in 1978. The expansion would add 24 thousand square feet to the building.

Darling: "We've experience some large growth in our nursing program and some of the other programs that are operating out of that building. And frankly, we're producing graduates that North Dakota needs right now, and we can do more with more space."

Darling says legislators don't have a timetable for when the legislative spending bill will go up for a vote in the legislature.
