Authorities apprehended Steven R. Bonderud, 25, of Grand Forks, following a more than three hour standoff on South 17th Street in Grand Forks. The standoff shut down two blocks near 17th Avenue South.

The Grand Forks Police Department responded to a report of trespassing by a known subject at about 10:30 Sunday morning. Upon arrival officers noticed smoke coming from the house.

The caller was on scene and said a man was inside and possibly armed.

Officers then called in more assistance, including the SWAT team, bomb team and negotiators.

During the standoff, neighbors were told to stay inside for safety - that if extreme actions needed to be taken, they were in the line of fire.

Around 1:30 this afternoon, authorities released a flash-bang, a device typically used by law enforcement to stun a suspect before entry. No shots were fired.

After the use of the flash-bang, the suspect came out of the residence and was taken into custody.

The suspect was transported to Altru Hospital for a mental health evaluation.

The Grand Forks Fire Department extinguished the fire inside the home.

A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Hope Church and Bethel Lutheran were both evacuated during the standoff. Law enforcement used Bethel Lutheran as a command post.

Bonderud is charged with burglary, arson and felony criminal mischief.

He is being held at the Grand Forks County Correctional Center.
