A strange scene played out at the Cass County Jail this morning when a man crashed a Mercedes right through the jail's front door.
The driver is 59-year-old Thomas Siavash of Fargo. He was checking in for the 24/7 program, which requires him to submit a breathalyzer twice daily. He's been cited for reckless driving and driving under suspension. According to authorities he said nothing to indicate a bomb threat, but the fact that he drove directly through the double-glass doors into the lobby was strange enough for authorities to call in the bomb squad. The squad used a robot to take a closer look at the vehicle.
Paul Laney, Cass County Sheriff: "It's the sign of our times. After what just happened in Boston and what happens in other places, to have a vehicle that perfectly placed through our doorway, we have to think car bomb. We have to think safety and security of the jail, all of the inmates and all the people in the surrounding area."
After investigating, police do not believe alcohol was a factor or that the crash was intentional.
