Pet owners in Devils Lake will soon have tougher rules to follow in caring for their animals. The city commission approved four new ordinances regarding animals.

Pet owners will now face tougher penalties for animal neglect and owning disruptive animals. There will also be a limit of six combined dogs and cats per home in Devils Lake. Pet owners with more than six animals currently will be able to keep them. The commission did reject one ordinance after a public discussion -- an ordinance that would require cats to be on leashes outdoors. The new pet ordinances will go into effect August first.
