Northwest Minnesota will be the home to a craft distillery for high quality spirits. The new company is called Far North Spirits and will be built on a family farm just south of Hallock.

The Far North Spirits will be just one of two craft distilleries in Minnesota. Mike Swanson and his wife Cheri have moved back to their home town of Hallock from St. Paul to build the distillery on the family's farm. They plan to have it built and online this October. 4,700 cases are planned for the first year that include American-style gin, Dark spiced rum and rye whiskey. This is just one of a handful of farms in the US that will raise the grains used to distill the spirits. Swanson tells me this is a growing trend nationwide.

Michael Swanson: "Craft breweries have done really well in Minnesota and we are expecting a warm reception for craft spirits as well."

The spirits will be bottled in November. Since the whiskey has to be aged in barrels, that will be available next year.
