Guard Soldiers Leaving Bismarck

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Five Blackhawk helicopters flew in a formation over the state Capitol building, carrying North Dakota National Guard soldiers who are deploying to Iraq. Family members and friends stood in a steady rain to wave goodbye.

The 47 soldiers with Company C of the 285th Aviation Battalion are part of the 285th Air Assault Battalion headquartered in Arizona. They will be serving in Iraq for a year, providing air support for ground troops.

The helicopters left Monday for the soldiers' mobilization station at Fort Sill, Okla. Guard officials say Company C includes mostly pilots and crew chiefs.
