A man is in custody after allegedly stabbing a Wahpeton store clerk with a scissors and locking employees and customers inside the building. Police say the attack appears to be random and happened around 8 Wednesday night.

They say the male suspect, whose name has not yet been released, walked into the store, locked seven other people in a back room and stabbed a female clerk with a scissors. Police arrived in less than a minute and tried to arrest him, but a fight broke out and an officer was injured. Authorities were forced to tase the suspect. The victim, suspect and police officer all had to be taken to a hospital for their injuries. The victim has been released with injuries to her neck and police say she's lucky to be alive.

Chief Scott Thorsteinson, Whapeton Police: "It could've been a lot worse. If our officers hadn't been there so quickly, the employee might have been more badly injured or killed. Anytime you start slashing people or stabbing people in that area of the body you run a great risk of harming them terribly."

Police say they plan to formally charge the man tomorrow with aggravated assault, kidnapping, and possibly armed robbery. They say they will release his name after he is charged.
