FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Sandbag making operations are under way in Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn.
The city of Fargo has moved garbage trucks out of a storage warehouse to make room for volunteers. City spokesman Bruce Grubb says he's hoping to have 100,000 sandbags stacked on palates by the end of the day.
More than a dozen inmates from the Cass County jail were among the first to show up when "Sandbag Central" opened at 8 a.m. Monday. Inmate Bruce Becker, who's serving time for a child support violation, says he wants to help out the community and possibly get some time knocked off his sentence.
Fargo hopes to make 1 million sandbags and Moorhead 300,000 bags to defend against possible flooding from the Red River this spring.
