A Grand Forks woman is hoping a third kidney transplant in two decades will be the final one.
Her body rejected two other donated kidneys and now another family member will try to give the gift of life on more time.
For the last 15 years this has been Bobbi Jo Brenner's reality, kidney dialysis. But a miracle third chance at a new kidney could stop this daily routine for good.
Bobbi Jo Brenner: "We got listed at Mayo in March of 2009, we've had numerous people come forward wanting to get tested I think 20 in all."
Brenner was diagnosed with kidney failure when she was 11. Since 1991 she's had two transplants, both were rejected by her body. Because of that, a new transplant would add more risk.
Bobbi Jo Brenner: "Even coming to the decision of wanting to do it again, that’s been hard because there’s a lot of a memory from the past transplant it wasn't a good situation."
Brenner's husband's sister is a match, and at the end of the month they will head to The Mayo Clinic in Rochester for a third transplant. Hopefully, if the count isn't low enough the transplant won't happen.
Willi Brenner: "Is an incredible gift for someone so close to give life, on the other hand it's my sister and my wife going through a major operation."
Brenner and her husband are being cautious this time. And are ready for the chance that she may be on dialysis for good.
Bobbi Jo Brenner: "I'm ok with it it's not ideal, another part of me wants to be free of it.”
Her brother even started a Face Book group called "Ever thought of becoming an organ donor." More than 200 people joined the group many who Bobbi Jo didn't even know, and some were even tested to be potential donors.
