An overnight blaze in Pembina has claimed an entire home. Fire crews were still on scene late tonight.

The fire started just before 8:30 last night and five renters are now homeless including the Pembina Fire Chief himself. Chief Jon Kalka worked with crews through the night and all day today trying to save his own home. Three people were in the house when the fire started. They tried to put out flames on the third floor where couches were burning, but it was just too much.

Fire fighters rescued one resident who was sleeping while the house was burning. Crews were trying to contain the blaze at first but soon efforts turned to just putting out hotspots. It was one of the oldest homes in the city, built in the 1800s. Chief Kalka says that's part of the reason the blaze was so difficult to contain. Kalka says residents stayed at the Red Roost Inn last night. He says he doesn't know where he's going to go tonight, that he hasn't had time to think about that yet but that life goes on. Fire crews from Neche, Emerson and Hallock are still on scene. Check back to WDAZ for updates as this story develops.
