A Larimore, N.D., man has reached a deal with prosecutors over felony charges that he terrorized and assaulted his mother last month, threatening to kill her and other relatives.

Dustin Kamphaugh, 23, was arrested May 4 after his mother told a Grand Forks Sheriff’s deputy that Kamphaug, drunk and “acting crazy,” had jumped her from behind as she tried to enter her Larimore home.

He choked her, threatened to go to the home of other relatives “and take them out” then return and “take her out,” his mother said, according to an investigator’s affidavit.

When she tried to call 911, Kamphaug grabbed her cell phone and threw it, breaking it.

At his arraignment Tuesday in state district court in Grand Forks, Kamphaug pleaded not guilty to three felony charges — domestic aggravated assault, terrorizing and interfering with an emergency call — that each carry maximum prison sentences of five years.

But his attorney Jessica Ahrendt said he has reached a tentative agreement with prosecutors and will change his plea and be sentenced in August.
