A Devils Lake veteran is now the head of the state's VFW chapter. Emery Fisher served as the vice commander before being elected the state commander for North Dakota at the beginning of the month. He will serve a one year term.

Fisher says he vows to fight for North Dakota veterans here and in Washington, traveling and meeting with politicians to promote veterans' causes. He says his main focus will be improving health care for veterans. Fisher says he's already gotten started on the job, just days after he was elected.

Fisher: "I hope to travel and visit every post in the state. I've started doing that already, and then represent that state at the national convention in September, and travel to Washington."

The North Dakota VFW counts more than 8,100 veterans among its ranks.
