Construction crews at the Devils Lake airport made a grizzly discovery recently -- they found a set of human remains near where a new runway is slated to be built. The body was found in late May, causing a delay in the airport expansion project.

Local law enforcement investigated the scene and called in the state archeologist from Bismarck, who determined the body could be up to five hundred years old. Remains that old are assumed to be Native American. A group from the Standing Rock tribe decided to leave the remains in place, instead of re-burying them. Ramsey County Sheriff Steve Nelson says it's actually fairly common to find remains like this at construction sites.

Nelson: "Well anytime there's an unmarked grave or any type of human remains, we get involved as far as an investigation to determine, you know, what we have, where its a crime or something else."

Authorities aren't revealing exactly where the body is located, out of worries that someone could interfere with the burial site.
