Lake Region State College in Devils Lake dedicated its brand new 1.3 megawatt wind turbine Wednesday afternoon. The ceremony marks the end of more than a decade of work to bring the turbine to Devils Lake.

The turbine will be used for hands-on training for the school's wind energy tech program. When students aren't using it, the turbine will provide enough electricity to power the entire lake region campus. Lake Region president Dr. Doug Darling says it's the missing piece for the school's wind energy program.

Darling: "It really takes out wind energy tech program to the next level when they work on a live, commercial grade turbine, and they've got experience actually working on the equipment they'll be working on in the field."

Excess power generated by the turbine will be sold to Otter Tail power company. School officials say the wind turbine will actually pay for itself in about 15 years.
