A 31-year old Saint Michael woman appeared in U-S District Court in Grand Forks today after being charged with child abuse and neglect in last week's death of a three-year-old girl on the Spirit Lake reservation.

According to a criminal complaint, Hope Louise Tomahawk Whiteshield, the wife of the toddler's grandfather, threw the girl down an embankment by the family's home near Saint Michael. The complaint states she said she threw the girl and pushed the girl's twin sister over because she was depressed about having kids all the time. This latest incident is putting the spotlight back on the reservation, which has been dealing with child welfare issues for more than a year.

Whiteshield will be in court again on Monday at a hearing to determine whether she should be held in federal custody until further proceedings.
