Petitions were turned in today in an effort to remove Spirit Lake Tribal Chairman Roger Yankton from office. Organizers have been collecting signatures for well over a month. They say they've got nearly 600 people to say it's time for Yankton to go.

Petitioners say they have 580 signatures... about 40 more than the tribal court says is needed to bring the petition forward.

Petition author Erich Longie says it's getting more and more difficult to find people to sign, so it's now time to bring the petition forward. He says he waited until after the recent tribal council elections to turn the petition in.

But now he says Yankton's fate should be known within a week.

Longie: "They have seven days to go through the signatures, validate it. If everything is validated they have to call a recall hearing within seven days from the time we turn it in."

Yankton's fate will be sealed at the recall hearing. There will be a simple majority vote at the meeting to decide whether to keep him or kick him out of office. The tribal secretary says the council has no comment on the petition.
