Chief Tribal Judge Shirley Cain is out at the Spirit Lake Tribal Court. Sources at Spirit Lake say Cain had given 30 days notice of her resignation, but the tribe decided to oust her immediately.

Marty Foote with the BIA police department says he got an order to remove Cain from the tribal courthouse today, but she left on her own accord. Sources say Cain's departure is related to the death of two-year-old Laurynn Whiteshield, who died two weeks ago on the Spirit Lake Reservation. The death has caused an uproar both on and off the reservation, with Senators Heidi Heitkamp and John Hoeven vowing to take action to protect children on the reservation. Child welfare advocates say the death and subsequent fallout are the crest of a wave of anger felt by tribal members.

Judge Cain would not comment on camera on her leaving the tribal court, and the tribal council could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
