WIMBLEDON, N.D. -- A storage bunker containing the fireworks for the Sanborn Fire Department’s Fourth of July celebration exploded Thursday evening.

The explosion destroyed the storage bunker and its contents -- including $3,000 worth of fireworks -- but caused no other damage or injuries.

The bunker is a few hundred yards from a home on a rural farm south of Wimbledon. The occupants of the farmstead were not at home at the time of the explosion and did not notice a problem until Friday morning when they saw smoke. Neighbors indicated they heard the sound of an explosion at about 6 p.m. Thursday.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, according to Charlene Lyter, wife of fire chief Tim Lyter.

The fire department is also considering its options for the Fourth of July display, according to Mike Griffin, member of the Sanborn Fire Department.
