Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - For about a year now people in Argyle, Minnesota have been getting by without a restaurant in town. The only one there closed, until now. The Dell is back open.
Nine-year-old Tyler Tonkin stays busy helping his parents at their family-owned restaurant.
Tyler Tonkin, Parents Own The Dell: “I have been the dishwasher.”
The Tonkin's moved to Argyle from Arizona a month ago to be closer to family and reopen the town’s only restaurant. Tyler says it's the…
Tyler: “Coolest thing ever.”
Tyler: “Very good food.”
Ernie, Customer: “I think I've eaten here five times this week.”
The Dell first opened in 1977 by Kimberly Tonkin's grandfather. It was sold out of the family in 1997, then again last year. Those owners remodeled it but shut down this year.
Gary Tonkin, Owner/The Dell Restaurant: “Whatever they did with the menu and the way they ran it just didn't go over in town. Sometimes you can change things in a small community and it's not accepted.”
So, the Tonkin's, along with Chef Tyler Malm, are working to get things back to how they used to be.
Tyler Malm, The Dell Restaurant Chef: “It feels like home again. I spent most of my high school years here, and now it's good to be back.”
So far, so good.
Gary: “Between yesterday and today, about 1,000 people have come through the doors.”
The Dell owners say opening back up benefits more than just hungry customers. They're giving a boost to the local economy by getting supplies from nearby businesses, like a grocery store, lumber yard and a custom paint shop.
Kimberly Tonkin, Owner/The Dell Restaurant: “We want to keep it in the community. If we support them, they're going to support us.”
Gary: “The community has really been supporting us and coming in and they want us to be successful. That's the key is when the community wants you to be successful, and we give them what they want, can't beat it.”
For now it's mostly bar food but the owners plan to dish out their full steakhouse menu by September 1st.
