An East Grand Forks committee is studying new ways to pay for street repairs. One idea gaining traction is doing away with special assessments in favor of a flat fee.

The city is trying to come up with a way to make road special assessment more fair.

A local task force met again today to look at the the issue. The city is considering a monthly fee on all property owners instead of charging special assessments on properties along streets where the work is done.

Under this plan, those living non-assessed state-aid roads would pay their fair share. The committee says they'd also have to make sure newer developments were not double taxed.

Scott Huizenga /East Grand Forks City Administrator. "For newer nieghborhoods that are currently paying for special assessments. Should they be paying the same fee as established nieghborhoods."

If East Grand Forks did go to a fee based system for road repair, they may have to seek special legislative approval.
