Damage to the city’s levee system has the East Grand Forks City Council considering adding a trespassing ordinance.

Tire tracks, likely from an all-terrain vehicles, have been discovered on the levee on the south side of town, and council members also expressed concern for the privacy for residents who live near the levees at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

An ordinance including wording that would ban acts the council members did not consider to be criminal — including sledding on the levees in the winter — was rejected Tuesday. City Attorney Ron Galstad said a list of exemptions was initially prepared to go with the ordinance, but he said the “exemption list got to the point that the exemptions were swallowing the law.”

Council members will bring the issue to their next work session, scheduled for July 23.
