From the south end of town to the north, new buildings are going up all around Grand Forks.
Construction on the new Wal-Mart is in full swing. The second Wal-Mart in Grand Forks takes up about 20 acres near the intersection of Gateway Drive and 55th Street. Right now, excavating and concrete work is getting done. Construction supervisors say the exterior of the building should be up within a month and a half. It's expected to open for business in April 2014. City planners say the business is already sparking others to consider building on the north side of town.
Ryan Brooks, City Planner: "We know that whole stretch isn't going to be commercial. We are looking at how to incorporate housing into that area. Nothing firm as of yet, but I think that will be in the future."
Another big project starting soon near Gateway Drive is UND's new med school.
