Devils Lake residents will soon have access to a new food shelter.

In order to make the project a reality, some volunteers devoted their Saturday to begin renovating a building.

Kevin: "Lets take our church outside the four walls and to where the need is."

This building behind me used to be the old Eagles Club. It's been sitting vacant for about 8 years, but with the help of some local churches and a couple volunteers, it's being turned into something more.

Brandon Culver- Hope Center Director: "The Hope Center was founded by about 5 or 6 individuals that got together and realized our community needed one, so it's a food pantry but we also realized there's other needs out there."

That group of 6 individuals grew to 20 after churches in the area met and agreed that the Hope Center was something the city needed.

Brandon: "And those 20 people have raised $144,000 to make this dream possible in opening a Hope Center in devils lake."

Aside from raising more than 100,000 those same 20 people have pledged to donate $2,400 a year for the next three years to ensure the doors stay open.

Michalyn: "We'll be the heart of the community."

The center has three main goals, providing a well run food pantry.

Brandon: But not long after that we're looking at the shelter needs of Devils Lake and also the mentoring and counseling needs.

The Hope Center is set to open within the next 3 months.
